Inspiration of How to Incorporate Film Techniques into My Design

180 Degree Rule

180 degree rule helps establish the orientations of characters, and it ensures the consistency of the spectators' perspective. It maintains the continuity in the film.

When the rule breaks, it will confuse the audience and create a sense of disorientation.

For my design, I will use the 180 degree rule in both ways to confuse people's eyes and how they are oriented in the building.

Framing (framed shot)

It is when objects are framed by the boundaries when using a rectangle, or enclosing shape(shadow, door, mirror or hallway)
By using the technique of framing, I will guide people what to see, then incorporate the 180 degree rule to confuse people in the space.

Inspirational Designs:

The Pensieren Circle -
using simple shape to frame out what people can
see and what they cannot see

Kazimir Space Model -
carving out shapes in the walls or creating interested shadows to
frame the view

Wohnsiedlung in Novazzano -
framing the circulation to create interested space

Creo Hall -
carve out walls to let in the natural lights to create the frame
for the circulation space

Portugal Contemporary Art Museum -
framing the circulation by placing columns or carving out
the floor to help frame the space below.

Louisiana State Museum -
framing the space by intersecting the walls in different angles

Site/Building -
I decided to place the building across the library and try not
block the circulation.
Section Diagram -
I got this diagram from my previous drawdle

Perspective 2 - Asynchronization

Perspective 3 - 180 degree rule

Plans / Sections -

What's wrong:The plan does not incorporate the film techniques
enough. Additionally, the plan is too boxy, and they are not
interested or planned carefully enough.

What to change:
I should think about how the techniques can help me with
designing the plans. Also, I should make more drawdles to
give myself some inspiration for how the plans should look.

Crits After 2 Schemes & Next Step

After the crits with my professor, this will be the scheme that I will be exploring.

Some suggestions are:
  1. Rethink about the shape from the drawdle(derives more from it)
  2. Think of different possibilities for the circulation(not just elevators and escalators, but have others such as stairs and ramps for larger group of people move faster in the building.)
  3. Connect the building more to the site, maybe make it more linear with the circulation of the site to create better angles of viewpoints

Next moves:
  1. Look back to the drawdle and explore it carefully to come up with a more interesting shape of different levels
  2. Keep the idea of having transparent large open space
  3. Incorporating different ways of circulation in different areas
  4. Narrow the building to create a better view of the site
  5. Derives the possibilities of interested interior spaces through the technique of avant-garde film, such as asynchronization/asynchronous sound, fade, framing, shot/reverse shot, zoom and 30-degree shot.

Intervening UNAM - 2 Schemes

In this project, we are asked to create a "denaturalizing" architecture by incorporating cinematic effects of avant-garde film and place it somewhere near UNAM library. Additionally, our design should derives from the previous UNAM mapping drawdle.

Process:

1. start by orienting my drawdle around to come up with the shape of my building

2. some sketches for some possibilities

Scheme 1: This building has total of four floors, and one is underground, including some outdoor spaces on the roof.

Scheme 2: The shape of each level comes from the shape of the drawdle circulation. Total of six floors, incorporating some large transparent spaces and outdoor spaces. Woods represents the elevators and that is how people circulate in the building. The bottom floor is underground.

UNAM Mapping: Final Drawing & Drawdle

Drawing

For the drawing, I used the vertical sections of the site and combined them to create an axon for my transitional space. Then I exploded the buildings away from the transitional space.

In the crit, we were asked to present one of our classmates' drawings. I realized I did not make clear the idea that I am using sections to create the drawing. One of the suggestions is to separate the sections away from each other a little to make it more clear. The other suggestion for the drawing to having the transitional space above and exploded buildings below.

Drawdle

In the drawdle, I used horizontal sections to form the transitional space, and I added the strips in the vertical way to highlights the transitional circulation.

This is how the back of the drawdle looks. It has shown the transitional space in the vertical sections because I used the technique of weaving to make this drawdle.

If I have more time to do this project, I will cut more sections. Additionally, I might think of another way to show the circulation in a more abstract way.

UNAM Mapping Progress Pin-up

Drawings

For the drawings, I first did the plan to show where the
transitional space happens and where the columns are located.

Then I did some sections in both directions to show the
relationship between the buildings and path.

Lastly, I did an axon and a sectional axon to show highlight
the transitional space.

SECTIONAL AXON #1

AXON #2

After the crits, I realized that I did not show the transitional space
enough because I focus too much on the buildings around it.

In order to improve on the drawings and show the transitional space more clear,
I am going to try and use the sections to make the axons.

Drawdles

This is the first time that I try to use papers to make drawings. I think the challenging part of working with paper are:

       - has to be score in order to fold nicely
       - should leave some space around the border of the paper
       - use x-acto to cut the paper

#2 Use the idea of weaving to map out the path

#3 Try to incorporate sections in the drawdle

#4 Using only a sheet of paper
